Grandaddy Music Video Analysis

The band I have chosen to study is Grandaddy since they are a similar genre to Dinosaur Pile-Up. Formed in 1992 in California, you could classify there genre of music as Indie Grunge.

From there first studio album release, under the western freeway, Grandaddy’s videos for there singles have had certain consistent characteristics which identify the band from others. Firstly there are the band members, specifically the front man. In all there videos, starting from Crystal Lake, the front man has worn a baseball hat which has either Grandaddy written on it or other words. This stays consistent through out possibly used as a trademark or so we can identify him easier. Another feature is there space-like, psychedelic theme which carries on throughout the bands videos. Using toys (now it’s on), house hold objects (El Caminos in the west) and children (El Camino and I’m on standby).  A main feature is blue sky in the videos. The weather in all stays very consistent through all there videos. These are some of the basic similarities for all the videos.

Over time Grandaddy’s image has stayed the same. Checked shirts with a grungy feel to there whole set up, there self image doesn’t change at all from there early videos. The only possible thing which is different is the video budget meaning more can be spent on effects and computer additions but overall the actual band image has stayed the same.

In majority of Grandaddy’s videos the mise-en-scene stays relatively consistent. There clothing stays similar with there content use of hats, checked shirts and ripped jeans, which supports there music genre style as grunge and throughout there videos these features stay the same.
Camera work on Grandaddy’s videos however varies. In there earlier videos (Crystal Lake, now it’s on) the techniques used on the camera are generally simple with long shots and the narrative mainly based on the bands performance. But for there later albums, the videos become more in-depth. On ‘el Caminos in the west’ not only does the video have a narrative and tells a story but also the camera uses different filming techniques to add to the overall video. It uses fish eye, close up shots for emotion, special effects i.e. green screen etc.
These additional changes helps the viewer relate the videos to other media texts. The story’s Grandaddy use mainly parody real sitcoms/ reality shows on American television. The shows the copy are A-team, Wife swap and big brother.

CD Front Cover Analysis

Dinosaur Pile-Up

  • Pretty much the same logo for band name on each cover
  • Logo seems immature with rough handwriting and lightning bolts
  • Pictures of the members in front cover – would expect some kind of different art
  • Back cover uses similar font to the band logo
  • Images kind of relate to name of CD eg. Picture of planet on Most Powerful E.P in the Universe
Nirvana

  • Same font for band name on each cover
  • Quite controversial covers reflecting the style and messages of the band
  • Logos on back of cover at the bottom like most CD covers
  • Pictures of people/photographs are used instead of more arty images
Weezer

  • Mostly quite minimalist with simple solid colours as the backgrounds
  • The entire band are featured on each cover
  • No album names – albums distinguished by different colours
  • Band logo stays practically the same on each album
Foo Fighters

  • A lot of sci-fi like images used with some exceptions (A Foo Fighter was a WWII UFO)
  • Album name sometimes on front cover but always on the side of the case
  • Band name logo different on each CD
  • Institutional logos all on back in regular place for CD cover

Foo Fighters Music Video Analysis

Foo Fighters Music Video Analysis

Here is an analysis of some of the music videos from the Foo Fighters. I decided to use the Foo Fighters instead of  Dinosaur Pile-Up since Dinosaur Pile-Up only have one music video which is a very similar style to some of the Foo Fighters videos.

Most of the Foo Fighters music videos are split into two main categories/sub genres one being comedy or ‘spoof’, like the video ‘Learn to Fly’, and the other being more serious, like the video ‘Best of You’.

This shows that the band identifies themselves as being serious and down to earth but that they can also be fun by laughing at themselves. The Foo Fighters started off sounding quite dirty and rough around the edges, which is reflected in the music video ‘I’ll Stick Around’ then evolved into a slightly cleaner sound, which can be seen in later videos possibly due to the advancement in filming technology.

Most of the bands videos have the generic rock band music video conventions, which is mostly some sort of basic narrative cutting to footage of the band playing and visa-versa. The narrative in most of the videos almost always contains things like comedy, some sort of weird special effects and more serious narratives including love. The only thing that has really changed with the Foo Fighters music videos is the fact that the quality of camera and other filming equipment has improved. They still pretty much have the same mix of light-hearted, funny music videos and more serious ones that they had 5 years ago.

In practically all of the Foo Fighters videos you see footage of the band playing therefore their instruments would be a typical part of the mis-en-scene. This gives them the obvious image of a rock band. Also, the band always feature in the narrative parts of the music video. The Foo Fighters visual image differs in each video, which shows that they are creative. In some videos, like ‘DOA’, strange camera angles are used together with strange special effects, which gives the videos some quirkiness and is also sometimes funny reflecting in the image of the band. The Foo Fighters have done some videos relating to other media texts. For example the song ‘Learn to Fly’ relates to the comedy film ‘Airplane’ as the narrative is about something going wrong on a plane and then the band has to learn how to fly it.

Also, the music video for ‘The One’ relates to the film ‘Orange County’ since the band wrote the song as a track for the film.
